Summer Fun Continues
If you missed the first Family Fun Night with Fax Gilbert and
Mimes, Masks, and Magic, you missed side-splitting laughter and a chance to
win some great prizes. Puzzles and games were won by Dave Munsen, Sarah Frederick, and
Misty Sweet. Molly Galm won the Bob the Builder DVD. Winning stuffed dogs were
Sophie Munson and Abbie Duhn. Connie Tifft won the grand prize of a Dewey the cat book bag
containing soda, popcorn, books, DVDs, card games, and magazines. Congratulations to all
our winners and thanks to everyone for coming. The Summer Reading Programs continue during
July with three more main attractions.
Family Fun Night, Swarm Over to Your Library,
Tuesday, July 8th, at 6:30 PM
Members of the Iowa Honey Producers, Marlene Boernsens and family, from
Ocheyedan, will come to the library to tell us all about how bees make honey. They will
bring some of the many products that include honey and beeswax. You may even be able to
taste some of their flavored honey products. If the weather conditions permit, they will
be bringing a glass-sided super (a box) with bees in it! You will be able to
watch the bees as they create the hexagon-shaped cells where they store the honey. The
Boernsens will show everyone the special equipment they use to approach the bees and
handle the frames of honey. Bees are one of our most important insects because of all the
plants that rely on them for pollination. Come to the library on July 8th to learn all
about the beneficial bees and win prizes too!
Special story time with Dan Wardell, Monday, July 14th,
at 9 or 10 AM
On Monday morning, July 14th, we will have a special guest for two
story hours. Dan Wardell from the Kids Club of IPTV will be presenting story hours at 9 AM
and 10 AM. You can choose either time that works best for you. Dan will have the kids
enjoying stories, games, and fun galore. You can see some of the other libraries that Dan
has visited this summer by going to the Internet at http://www.iptv.org/kids/kidsfamily.cfm
and reading Dans blog and map. Then come to the library for a
Dantastic time!
3rd Family Fun Night, Pockets Full of Fun,
Tuesday, July 22nd, at 6:30 PM
Join us on July 22nd for the last Family Fun Night with Lisa Laird and
Pockets Full of Fun. Join Lisa and her friends from Pockets Full of
Fun as they learn about some interesting creatures in the insect world. Magical
illusions, help from children in the audience and a very special ending surprise will be
part of the program as well. Two children will even become puppets as Lisa tells the story
Hey, Little Ant! by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Remember to sign up as you enter
the library so that you have a chance to win one of the prizes given away that night.
On the same night, Tuesday, July 22nd, the Spencer Schools will be
having prize drawings from their program of 6 Books for a Successful Summer.
Read an age appropriate book, fill out a Book Bonus Slip, and return it to a Summer
Reading Business Partner. The partners are Spencer Public Library, Goal Kick Sporting
Goods, Fareway, Wal-Mart, South Park Mall, Hy-Vee, and the YMCA Summer Camp location at
Johnson School. There are over 50 prizes to be given away including food, gift cards,
furniture, and many other great prizes. The more you read, the more chances you have to
win a prize!
All of these great programs are to encourage reading by the areas
children. Research shows when you read at least six books at your reading level during the
summer break, you will maintain your reading skills. Avoid the brain drain and
read this summer!
