June is a
busy and exciting time at Spencer Public Library. The Adult Summer Reading Program –Build A Better World has begun and
we encourage you to join. In fact, tell your friends, co-workers, and family
that they could win fabulous prizes by reading books, attending adult Spencer
Public Library programs, or writing book reviews. The library will have eight
prize drawings throughout June and July with the grand prize being a Kindle
Fire! So, sign up for the Adult Summer
Reading Program today! Not only will you have a chance to win prizes, but the
programming is superb.
In June we offer DIY Club: Time To Tidy. Before you build a better
world, start with your home. Librarian, Robin Munson, will show you how to
declutter your house using the KonMarie method of tidying up. Marie Kondo is
a Japanese organizing consultant and author
who wrote the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
We
will be watching the movie, A United Kingdom starring Rosamund
Pike. Inspired by true events, A United Kingdom is a Romantic Drama
based on a true story. In the 1940s, Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana shocks
the world when he marries a white woman from London. A perfect movie for our
SRP theme Build a Better World.
All aboard for an Iowa
rail adventure! Rudy Daniels, retired
professor, author, and railroad historian, will present Trains Across Iowa. Learn about the past, present and future of the Hawkeye State’s railroads
and explore Iowa’s unique position in the construction of the first
transcontinental railroad. Sponsored by Humanities Iowa.
Retired Canadian Pacific Railway Conductor and
historian, Dennis Wilson, will
present The Orphan Train History. They have been called nurseries on
wheels, mercy trains, and baby trains, but it was the name given by a New York
Times reporter, Orphan Trains, that stuck. Join us for an informative talk on
an underrepresented time in Iowa history.
It’s time for Maker Fest! Maker Fest
is a festival of invention and celebration of the Maker movement. Maker Fest is an all-ages gathering for
STEAM activities. Learn how to make bath bombs, roll sushi, and color like a
pro. Fun for all ages!
For
Book to Movie we will be watching the film, The Namesake based
on the 2003 novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. The Namesake is the story of a man and his family, his life and hopes, loves
and sorrows as he comes to grips with his cultural identity as a young American
with Indian immigrant parents. This
is a fictional story you won’t want to miss. Our next book to movie will be The
Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham.
Like always, we have had tremendous community support
from businesses in Spencer. Look for our current SRP sponsor list in this
newsletter and be sure to thank them for their support of your local library. I
hope everyone has a great summer! Happy Reading!
