SPL's 2017 Build a Better World Summer
Reading Program begins in just a few weeks, so we will be spending this
month preparing reading logs, organizing prizes, and planning fun events for
June and July.
Some activities to
look forward to...a Captain Underpants
Movie Release Party June 2nd, the Science
Center of Iowa is coming June 22nd, and special guest Dino O'Dell will be entertaining us on July 10th, just
to name a few.
In addition to our
regular summer events this year, the SPL Children's Department will be
launching a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program.Parents and
caregivers who sign up their infant, toddler, or preschooler for the Summer
Reading Program will also be given the 1000 Books packet.
Parents are
encouraged to read to their young ones every day and record the number of
books. The ultimate goal is to share 1000 books with your child by the time
they reach kindergarten.
Perhaps you
read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? 10 times each evening
before bed. You may count that as 10 books. For every 100 books you
read toward the 1000 goal, your child will receive a book for your home
library.
There will be no
"date due" to this program, but you and your child may track your
progress on a sticker chart here at the library. Once 1000 books have
been read, your child/family will be featured on a "wall of fame."
Let us help you
make the most of family reading time, build your home library, and give your
child a head start on learning.
Kick-Off for the Summer Reading Program, as well as 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten, is on Friday, May 26th from 12:30 to 6pm.
"Build a better world" for your family this summer!
